A Message From Agur Lake Camp

We are reaching out to all those who support and visit Agur Lake Camp to provide an update on the camp as we return to the office in Summerland.

We have very good news! Agur Lake Camp was saved by our neighbour and his crew of eight. Armed with their own excavation equipment, water truck and fearless determination, they saved five properties, including the camp. They worked through multiple days and nights putting out fires and hot spots, and drove the water truck through flames to get supplies and fuel to run the pump.

No buildings and infrastructure were lost but lots of trees have burned. The crew was able to use the fire pump system that we purchased and installed this spring (thanks to funding from a BC Capital Gaming Grant and Cendek Railings Ltd and others) to soak the buildings and put out spot fires and hot areas on the grounds of the camp. This, and all the hard FireSmart work by our staff and volunteers over the years taking down trees, clearing deadfall and raking the forest floor, helped them immeasurably. BC Wildfire Service has now taken over in further safeguarding the camp by keeping our fire pump and sprinklers running, and installing additional ones in critical locations.

The fire started on Friday, August 7th just across the narrow valley from the camp. It immediately jumped across to our main road, Bathville Rd. At 5:45 pm on Friday, within the first hour of the fire starting, our caretakers, Wally, Julie and Mike made the rapid decision to evacuate the camp. They literally had to drive alongside flames on the road, but made it out safely with all our guests. They did not have time to do anything other than help everyone get in their vehicles and head to Summerland.

Our caretakers, Wally, Julie and Mike and our neighbour and his crew are true heroes!

For now, the office will be open Monday to Friday from 10-2.  Our office area is still on Evacuation Alert, while the camp remains within the Evacuation Order zone, but today things are calm. The camp will continue to be closed until further notice.  We do not have permission to access the camp yet, but as soon as we are able, we will go up to assess the grounds and start to clean up.

We will reach out to individual guests who were scheduled to visit this month and into September to provide more information and to process refunds.

In the end, thankfully, the camp is bruised but it survived.  To our many volunteers and supporters, while we did not lose major infrastructure, we will still need help in the coming weeks and months getting the camp back into shape.  We will keep you posted.

Thank you for your understanding, from everyone
